Quicksilver’s Meeting Minutes  ‘05

General Meeting Minutes
August 8, 2005

Welcome New Member – Marla Corey from Reno .  She is owned by a  Border Collie named Scout.

Treasurer’s Report: Checking $6006.98, Savings $1522.93

Secretaries Report: We received a Thank You from the American Cancer Society for the $1,115 donated through Pam Harris for the Relay for Life.  We also received a Thank You from Cynthia and Patrick Kennedy for the Trial Package we gave them as a wedding gift (after being together for 29 years, they tied the knot – ‘business’ she says).

The club donated $100 as a Level Two sponsor to High Desert DockDogs for their first ever sanctioned event at the Nevada State Fair.  We also donated to the Nevada State Fair $150 for the 4H group.

CPE Trial Update:  We have approximately 270 runs on Saturday and 250 runs on Sunday.  Nearly all the entries have been logged.  We have 83 dogs entered and 57 exhibitors; 9 exhibitors will be RV camping.  Carrie Dempsey volunteered to host the Continental Breakfast on Saturday and Becky Ellis volunteered to host for Sunday.  Thanks everyone.  Carrie D will check with Kathy Givens/Aussie Rescue if she can do lunch.  If Aussie Lunch is a go, we’ll staff with workers in half hour increments from 10:30 until 2pm .  Raffle tickets will be given to workers.  We’ll still have two rings/two judges but we’ll stagger the rings so only one runs at a time.  This allows for a smooth flow to the trial and eliminates stress on workers and exhibitors.  The club will take the Judges out to dinner at Red’s 395 BBQ on Saturday night at 5:00 pm .  Sign ups for reservations (all members welcome – self pay) will be taken Saturday morning at the check in desk.  There will be a workers only raffle.

Teresa Rector Seminar Update:  Oct 15-16 at Chris Vaught’s place in Washoe Valley .  Flyers will come out soon.   This will be an affordable seminar.

QAC Picnic Update:  The Picnic is now set for Monday Sept 12 at Fuji Park (pending approval from the city for availability).  Members should arrive at 5:30 pm – dinner is at 6:30 pm . The club will supply chicken, steaks and burgers, drinks and dessert.  Members will bring potluck appetizers and salads.  An email will be sent out shortly asking members which meat selection they would like.

Traci Haakinson/Lyon County Fun Match:  Traci is hosting an agility fun match on October 1 at the grass soccer field in the Smith area in conjunction with the Lyon County Car Cruisers.  Everyone is invited to come out and enjoy the fun match for a tiny entry fee.  She is looking a few people to assist in setting up, tearing down, etc.  If you will be there, please let Traci know you can help out.  It’s a lot of fun – fall is a great time for agility.

Fuji Park Availability:  The weekend of Sept 24-25 is still available at Fuji if someone wants to host an event.  Please let Becky Ellis know ASAP – since the SplashDogs people are holding the weekend open if someone wants to use the park.  Otherwise the date will be released back to the public.

DOCNA:  This is a new venue called Dogs On Course in North America .   It’s very flexible in that the clubs can chose slatted or non-slated contact equipment, 36 or 42 inch contact zones as long as it’s noted in the premium.  Also the times are generous for newcomers but there are levels that will challenge the more advanced dogs.  Perhaps after the first of the year, once they have it all organized and the kinks worked out, QAC can look into hosting an event.

Decals for Trailer:  Chris Vaught to investigate the pricing of decals for the big trailer from Alpine Signs (they do the decals for the forest service fire rigs).  We’d like our logo with our name and website on each side of the trailer and maybe a smaller logo on the rear door.  She’ll send the info to the board to vote on.

Upcoming Events:  Nevada State Fair August 24-28. Check out H3D’s Dock jumping event Thursday – Saturday in the Rodeo Arena.  Finals will be Saturday.  $10 gets you into the fair – enjoy!

MDT NADAC trial at Fuji Park Sept 3-5

HA=HA NADAC/ASCA trial at Fuji Park Sept 10-11

  • USDAA Trial May 21-22 – Premiums available now on the club website

  • Silent Auction/Sale of overstock of agility equipment to QAC members during the trial. Trail committees still have openings. Please step up to the plate. Since we have about 50 members and we host about three trials a year, you only need to volunteer to chair a committee once every leap year –or so (or would that be a blue moon?)

  • Fun Match at Fuji – July 9 in conjunction with Bonanza Kennel Club conformation and TMDTC obedience match. Looking for volunteers to help out.

  • CPE Trial Aug 20-21

  • Teresa Rector Seminar Oct 14-16 at Chris Vaught’s in Washoe Valley – stay tuned for updates

Old Business:

Judy McQuain spoke passionately of the Juniors program and asked for volunteers. She suggests a 4 person committee so they can rotate weeks (it’s an 8 week program) to lessen the load. The classes can be scheduled at your convenience. Still no takers…it would be a shame to let this important time spent with Juniors and their dogs fall by the wayside. Cori thought once the agility training classes were put on the calendar then someone (perhaps she) would volunteer – knowing what their own schedule is.

New Business:
4H Match at Fuji – looking for volunteers – Gwen Marsh, Kathy Port and Judy Dreyer expressed interest.

Two other items of new business were put out to the general membership but not discussed in detail as there wasn’t a large club turnout.

Kathy Givens, long time former member and Aussie Rescue Extraordinaire has two personally owned dogs who have recurring health issues. Donations for health care were suggested – on a personal level.

Free entry (or other compensation) to a QAC event for one dog to our tireless Newsletter Editor and Webmaster.

Other Local Events were mentioned:

April 16-17 Pepper Memorial – likely filled
April 30-May 1 R2R NADAC/ASCA trial
May 14-15 Susan Perry Seminar (contact MDT) – likely filled
June 11-12 R2R NADAC trial
June 25-26 NNASC Herding Trial

Wags:
Pilot (Jenny Haas) had a great day during his rookie field training day at Little Washoe Lake. He had three water and three land retrieves with pigeons. It was his first time successfully working with pigeons. So does this make him a Nova Scotia Pigeon Tolling Retriever?
Dora (Cori Meyer) got 3 Q’s at Dixon at the AKC trial in Standard. She got a 1st place and 2nd place and finished her NA. She got 3rd place in Jumpers with Weaves, to earn her first Novice Jumpers leg.
Whistler (Susan Woodin), a puppy Border Collie, has joined the Woodin household. He was the puppy demo dog at puppy socialization at Dayton Valley Veterinary Hospital.  From all reports, he’s quite a smart little guy and gets along well with his 4-legged housemates.
Jinx (JJ Bowen) has discovered that he can, in fact, herd.
Skotch (Becky Ellis) turned 6 years old on Sat., March 12th. He has a new SplashDogs pool personal best jump of 18’9”. He finished 7th at an event in Pleasanton , CA and qualified for the International Sportsmen Expo SplashDogs Finals taking 14th place overall. Skotch’s new passion is the field and retrieving birds!
Basil (Becky Ellis) wants to be a bird dog too and is doing very well at the practice hunt tests in Fallon with the Sierra Nevada Retriever Club. Basil went 3 for 4 at an AKC agility trial in Dixon March 5-6 with two 3rd place Q’s in Open JWW (Jumpers w/ Weaves) and a 1st place Q in Open Standard beating 14 other 24” dogs!

2005 Committee Assignments:
Juniors
:  Susan Woodin spoke on behalf of the 2004 Juniors committee and read a note from Judy Mcquain.  She said it is more the relationship between the kids and their dogs than it is honing in on any technical skill.  She encouraged members who are creative and/or who like kids (or not!) to step up and volunteer for the 2005 committee. It is an 8 week program taking place during the summer months.
Mentoring:  We will be putting together a new mentoring list will be discussed at the next meeting and will be included in the New Member Packets.
Sister Club Relations
:  We’d like volunteers to assist with maintaining relationships with all the other agility clubs in the area. – it’s a very easy duty.
USDAA Correspondent: This is a new committee whereby the chairperson acts as liaison to USDAA and takes photos, submits stories etc on on our USDAA trials.  A perk is getting free membership to USDAA.  Pam Richcreek volunteered.

New Member Packets
: Jenny Haas will  put together folders for new members.  The folder will contain CPE and USDAA membership forms, roster, intro to agility stuff, glossary of terms, newsletter, etc.
Wags for Wishes: Anne Marie Bellard and Stacy Coleman to head up.  A fundraiser comprised of many different dog events with proceeds going to Make a Wish Foundation.  To be held at Rancho San Rafael Park in 2006. Quicksilver participation TBD.  Check out the website www.wagsforwishes.com for more info on the event that’s being held this year.
